Dirtbag Rich: on balancing pay, purpose, and time flexibility
April 8, 2023 from Notes on Adventure
Those whose lives revolve around adventure tend to have similar career goals: they want to do meaningful work that can be scaled down far enough to leave sufficient time for their adventures, while also earning enough to fund those adventures and enjoy basic financial security. The term “dirtbag rich”—coined by Tim Mathis in The Dirtbag’s Guide to Life—is the closest thing I’ve found to this vision. Below is my own take on the concept.
Unschool: Clothes, Connections and Reflections of Love
April 8, 2023 from Stories of an Unschooling Family
The other day, I had a delightful conversation with one of my adult daughters while we were at a cafe sipping coffee. On my youngest daughter’s birthday, I tell her the story of the night she was born, as I do every year. “It was a warm summer’s evening, and I was relaxing on the sofa, watching a TV program about archaeology – it wasn’t particularly interesting – when everything began,” I say. “I continued watching for a while before saying to Dad, ‘I think it’s time to go to the hospital.’” I smile as I remember how Andy jumped up, grabbed my bag and elbow and rushed me to the car.
Too Much For Me
April 3, 2023 from Think Again
When your child finds it difficult to do things, they can easily start to feel bad about themselves. They wanted to go roller blading, but the rink was just too hectic. They were looking forward to going shopping, but then the shopping centre was too bright and noisy. They wanted to go and see their friend, but when it came to it, something wasn’t right and you came home early.
