Domination can end at home.
April 28, 2023 from Radical Mothering
Yesterday during our weekly chat on Clubhouse (which you can join in too! Right here) we discussed how being in partnership with our children, how centering consent, how doing all the things we do serves a much bigger purpose. Ok I’ll back up a minute. Someone actually asked whether we knew of research that showed how kids who are parented respectfully fare in adult life and in the workplace.

April 28, 2023 from Radical Learning Talks
Ahhhh our kids want to quit something! What do we do? If they dont push through they will never learn. These are thoughts old versions of ourselves can relate to and we see so common in parenting. We often fall into wanting to "support" by pushing our kids - or let's be honest - manipulate them.

However, I have concerns about the way they are being used in schools, and in particular how all attendance problems are being seen as caused by ‘anxiety’ and therefore treated with graded exposure therapy.

ChatGPT Finds Advice to Parents from Past Decades
April 23, 2023 from Freedom to Learn
A week or so ago, I was sitting on my back porch engaged in discussion with Tony Christopher, Executive Director of the National Institute for Play, about the decline over decades in children’s freedom to engage in play and other activities independent of direct adult surveillance and control. I mentioned the book by Markella Rutherford (reviewed here) in which she presented evidence of changing advice to parents, over decades, about children’s needs for independence versus their needs for direct guidance and protection.
