What’s the Best Place to Bring Up Kids?
April 30, 2022 from Stories of an Unschooling Family
Do you ever wonder where you should live? Are you providing the best environment for your kids? Is it rich and full of opportunities for learning? While Imogen and I were on holiday together, we wandered around Kiama where we were staying, taking photos and chatting about the differences between this coastal town and our village in the bush. Would we prefer to move to the beach? How would our life change if we did? Would we miss anything at home?
Our Schools: A Resource For Student Mental Health
April 29, 2022 from AERO
I have been involved with learner-centered education practically my whole life, ever since my grandfather sat down with me at his home in Boston and asked, “so what do you want to learn?” I was 5 years old. I started my first school when I was 23, in 1965. It is still going. But I don’t think I have ever seen a time when our approach to education has been more crucial. It is now literally a matter of life and death.
Ep. 249: U is for Understanding
April 28, 2022 from Fare of the Free Child
This week we’re focused on the letter U for understanding in our P.A.U.S.E.werk. Listen as we talk about the language of conscious parenting, the difference between dialogue and discussion, and then some. Domari and Akilah take us through some of their noticings about how understanding and control impact their relationships, and not just as mothers. Also, be ready for an insightful convo about an Instagram post where Ieishah Clelland (our Season 7 Co-Producer) questioned gentle parenting as a privilege. Akilah cites Dr. Sundiata’s distinction between dialogue and discussion as we question our relationship with understanding, and with discomfort. So much goodness in here! Pull out your pause pad and join us.
Exploring Unschooling Q&A, Episode 327
April 28, 2022 from Living Joyfully with Unschooling
Anna Brown and Erika Ellis join me again this week to dive into listener questions! And, as always, our Q&A conversations aren’t focused on giving anyone the “right” answer, because there isn’t a universal “right” answer for any given situation that will work for everyone. Instead, our focus is on exploring different aspects of the situation and playing with the kinds of questions we might ask ourselves to better understand what’s up. We’re sharing food for thought through the lens of unschooling.
The 5 principles of slow education
April 27, 2022 from Slow Education
I’ve been going deeper into defining what slow education could look like, and I wanted to share on here. The wider definition of slow education is that it is a rejection of fast schooling - this we can all agree on. It emerged as a reaction to something we don’t want. This is probably our biggest unifying factor. But going deeper into what slow education is about, takes us down a slightly more subjective, personal route. It won’t look the same for everyone. But it’s still worth exploring some basic principles we can define slow education by.

Carrying the Weight
April 25, 2022 from Swimming Upstream
Yesterday I said that I didn’t think I had anything left to write about. Today I drove to the city to visit my parents, deliver some soup to family sick with Covid, and pick up my son. Then I came back and had a breakdown. So don’t think that my lack of writing means that I don’t have shit to process. I guarantee that I will always have shit to process.
When You’re Tempted to Leave Unschooling and Try Something Else
April 26, 2022 from Stories of an Unschooling Family
Every evening of our recent holiday, Imogen and I swished through the warm waves as we walked along the beach, waiting for the sun to set. One evening, I noticed a group of birds on the sand. At first glance it looked like a gathering of seagulls, but there were two imposters in the lineup.
Could a Lack of Freedom Damage Our Kids’ Mental Health?
April 26, 2022 from Stories of an Unschooling Family
On the first morning of my recent holiday with my daughter Imogen, I got up early, grabbed my camera and headed to the beach. I sat alone on the sand, waiting for the sun to rise and thought about freedom. The last couple of years have been hard, haven’t they? In 2020, here in Australia, we endured a lockdown of several months. Last year, I was confined to home for almost 6 months.
