Unschool: Experiencing Energy and Gravity
April 14, 2023 from Stories of an Unschooling Family
Many years ago, my son, Callum, bought himself a skateboard and then, tucking it under his arm, he walked to a nearby dead-end road where he could teach himself how to use it away from the traffic. He was gone a long time, and when he finally returned home, a series of scrapes had appeared on his legs and arms. But there was a grin on his face.

Mentoring Ben: Part 1
April 12, 2023 from Blake Boles
Back in December 2022, I offered a year of free, one-on-one mentorship for a handful of young people. Following a stringent vetting and appeals process, I ended up with a single mentee: Ben Rehrman, an 18-year-old from the Philadelphia area.
Motivating Your Struggling Learner
April 12, 2023 from Raising Lifelong Learners
Homeschooling your gifted kiddo was supposed to be a breeze, right? After all, they’re super smart, driven, and independent… right? Well, maybe not. Gifted kiddos are just as different from each other as they are from neurotypical kids, and they’re often 2e, or twice-exceptional, too. 2e kiddos are hard to tease out because their struggles can mask their strengths, and their strengths can mask their struggles.
How Do You Know If Online Learning Is The Right Option?
April 11, 2023 from Honey! I’m Homeschooling the Kids
Technology has become a powerful tool in learning, transforming education in numerous ways. It has increased access to education, information and resources. Learning opportunities are now, quite literally, right at our finger tips. Technology has not only increased our access to information, but it has also broadened our access to where and how we want to learn and who we choose to learn with.
6 Qualities You Really Need to Be a Homeschool Parent
April 11, 2023 from Happiness is Here
What qualities do you really need to be a homeschool parent? Is it being super organised? Knowing the answer to every question? Having all the latest resources? Finding the best curriculum? Having a creek at the bottom of your garden and your children only wearing homemade clothing and never touching a screen?
Falling Unexpectedly in Love With Homeschooling My Gifted Child
April 10, 2023 from Raising Lifelong Learners
I’ll admit to having harbored some pretty unfavorable opinions towards homeschooling in the past. I was not only a product of public schools, I was a fan. As an extreme extrovert, I’d absolutely loved school, my classmates, all of the extracurricular activities I’d had the opportunity to be a part of. My AP classes afforded me the chance to earn college credits for free, my experiences in band, choir, student government, and as a mascot were life-changing and unique.
The Freedom to Make No Progress
April 10, 2023 from Think Again
One of the strangest things about how children are raised in this country is how everything becomes about ‘progress’ and assessment, from very early on. No matter whether it’s ballet, music, gymnastics or drama, there are systems of tests so that children can be graded even when they are only just old enough to play a few notes on the piano or turn a wobbly roly-poly.
#40 A new journey - slowing down, reconnecting, and embracing our children's autonomy, with Caroline Frances in Ontario
April 10, 2023 from The Unschool Space
Today I’m chatting with Caroline Frances from Ontario. Caroline lives with her husband and two sons who are 7 and 10, and they are just in the second month of their unschooling journey. They had tried different school environments, but found that, in particular for their eldest son, who is diagnosed Autistic with a PDA profile, they needed to find another way to live.
Unschool: Disco Boots and Old Stories
April 10, 2023 from Stories of an Unschooling Family
While Gemma-Rose and I enjoy coffee together, we listen to the music playing in the background, and I say, “This is Dad’s and my music! We listened to these songs when we were your age.” I tell my youngest daughter how we’d save our money, buy vinyl record albums with covers we examined intently, and listen to them on turntables. I mention a few of our favourite musicians, including The Police, The Tourists, Debbie Harry, UB40 and a string of heavy metal bands that Andy particularly liked.
