Great Books to Read with Your Kids in September
September 1, 2023 from Raising Lifelong Learners
September brings back to school, or homeschool routines, the beginning of harvest, and some other fun days you might enjoy incorporating into reading time. One of my favorite days this month is September 6th. Go ahead and take a guess at why, but you only get one…
Eek! A Bureaucrat!
September 1, 2023 from Free Range Kids
The town of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, has shut down one of its playgrounds due to an extremely serious issue: a mouse on the property. (Eek!) WTMJ-TV reports that the Imagination Station Playground was closed until further notice as the city dealt with this crisis. The municipality explained its vexing problem in a Facebook post.
51. When Our Kids Are Deschooling
September 1, 2023 from Radical Learning Talks
"Is my kid really gonna just sit there and do nothing?" This is a question we hear a lot and have even thought about ourselves during our own deschooling process. It comes from moments of fear and lack of understanding of what is really going on for our kids. In this episode, we dive into what can actually happen for kids that are deschooling, what happens for adults and how we can support our kids in their deschooling process without slipping into control or fear.
Celebration Time! Today marks 2 years of Podcast Interviews
August 31, 2023 from Let ‘em Go Barefoot
Two years ago I nervously hit publish on my very first podcast episode, which is a conversation with my first born, my son, who led me to the world of unschooling. I had no prior podcasting experience nor had I ever taken a class to learn how to interview people, record conversations, or edit audio. I simply had an idea and vision: talk to people and share their stories in the hopes of providing ideas and information to nurture and connect people to their children, themselves, and to each other.
Low Demand Parenting - and School
August 31, 2023 from Think Again
Your child is very much themselves. Doesn’t go along with the crowd, won’t fit the mould, sees through control and refuses to have any part of it. They are clear-sighted and honest and on their own developmental pathway. They respond badly to attempts to control their behaviour. Just bringing out a sticker chart is enough to ensure that they’ll never do that thing again.
Activities to Strengthen Your Family Team
August 30, 2023 from Raising Lifelong Learners
Your family unit is the backbone of your homeschool. There are many habits and activities that can nurture a team mentality, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself and your kids to be successful while building a strong, resilient, emotionally intelligent family.
[Podcast] How to Become a Better Reader
August 30, 2023 from Brave Writer
Have you noticed the shift from reading novels, newspapers, and research papers to watching 2-minute videos or skimming 280-character tweets? If you’ve got a student in the house, you might’ve seen them use tools like ChatGPT, the latest AI wonder, to draft their college papers. It’s like a quick jump from A to Z, bypassing the entire traditional writing journey.
On doing the things ourselves.
August 30, 2023 from Radical Mothering
A few days ago, I posted about what I do when my children don’t love the things I love. Now is the time for honesty, I think. I really was in denial about this for many years and I think that home educating is what pushed me to resolve the issue of projecting my own love of activities, or even often my failed successes or my “I wish I had done xyz” onto my children.
Sometimes Our Side Wins! Houston Parents Push Schools to Bring Back Recess
August 29, 2023 from Free Range Kids
Seems like there are big changes underway in about a third of Houston’s public schools. The particular change that play activist Rusty Keeler brought to our attention involves what many of us remember as the best part of the school day — and maybe our childhoods. Recess. Wait — what?
Not Back To School
August 28, 2023 from Think Again
When my children first didn’t start school, I saw a hole where school would have been. The absence loomed large. I saw empty years ahead with no Back to School Septembers, and no Sports Day in July. No school plays and no class assemblies. No chatting with other mums at the school gate. No end-of-year parties or school friends. I couldn’t imagine a childhood not marked out in Year groups, not defined by which teacher you had when.

Join your child in the adventure of living! In the end, what leaves the best impression on your kids is your hearty, enthusiastic participation in the stuff of life. Last year I spent a weekend with family—especially my five adult kids and their dad. Caitrin, my youngest, got married. What I noticed about all of our family interactions? The stuff Jon and I enjoyed doing the most WITH them is what they still love to do and talk about.
