Want Students to Succeed Almost Every Possible Way? Start a Play Club
December 9, 2023 from Free Range Kids
I’ve been sharing the benefits of children and play in our schools for well over eight years, especially since the pandemic subsided. I’m hard-pressed to think why parents, educators, board trustees and superintendents around the nation do not embrace all the positive effects of giving children the opportunity to play before, during, and after school.
Thoughts on Meaningful Work and Unschooling
December 9, 2023 from Swimming Upstream
We live in an age of meaningless work. For most of us, we spend the bulk of our waking life doing work to earn an income. This work can be rewarding or not. It can be self employment, volunteer work, care giving work, or selling your labour to someone else. Most of this work is designed to either contribute value on the capitalist marketplace or provide support to others who are contributing that value.
Oh I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day..
December 9, 2023 from Think Again
One little boy I knew found Christmas particularly puzzling. “Why is it on the 25th?” he’d ask. “Why not the 23th or the 28th? Why do we eat mince pies then and only then? If they were really nice, wouldn’t we eat them all year round? Why do we keep all our presents for the same day? I’d rather have mine now” Adults around him didn’t know how to answer beyond ‘That’s just how it is’.
The Value of Selfishness
December 9, 2023 from The Adventures of Blake
Ever since I started running trips for teenagers, I used them for my selfish purposes. I wanted to spend more time in Argentina, so I took a group to Argentina. I wanted to visit Australia, so I designed an Australia trip. I wanted an excuse to write a novel, so I created a Writing Retreat. I wanted to improve my tango; I offered a tango trip.
Festive joy lists
December 8, 2023 from Taking a Kinder Path
Time seems to speed up at this time of the year. And it’s easy to get bogged down in the to-do list and forget to enjoy yourself. Instead, let’s get intentional with a festive joy list so you can focus on fun and remember what you love about this season. So, I hear you say… What is a joy list? And how do I make one?
58. Are We Raising Spoiled Brats?
December 8, 2023 from Radical Learning Talks
Raising kids with respect, consent, autonomy and freedom in our society is definitely going against the norm. It can then be very confusing to see our free-ranged kids question their independence and freedom, push back against limits and behave in ways that society would easily label as “spoiled or bratty”.
Unschooling "Rules": About Food, Episode 356
December 7, 2023 from Living Joyfully with Unschooling
We're back with another episode in our Unschooling “Rules” series. And we use the word “rules” in quotes to draw attention to the fact that there is no such thing as an unschooling rule! It can feel easier to reach for a set of rules to follow, especially when we’re learning something new, but we want to offer you space to look within, to find what makes sense to you and what makes sense to the individual members of your family.
#53 Living, learning and thriving as a family, with Claire Gillespie in Hertfordshire, UK
December 5, 2023 from The Unschool Space
My guest today is Claire Gillespie from Hertfordshire in the UK. Claire lives with her husband and two sons, who are 15 and 13, and they’ve been unschooling for four years, after their oldest son asked to leave school. Amongst other things, we talk about the fascinating learning journeys children embark on when they’re in charge, how different we all are from each other and the inevitable ebb and flow of the days.
Brave Writer Precept #9: Our Allegiance is to What’s Right for Our Family
December 5, 2023 from Brave Writer
The ninth Brave Writer precept is: Our allegiance is to what’s right for our family, not any one homeschool method, community, or model. Today’s precept fits PERFECTLY with a Tea with Julie podcast I did called Finding a Homeschool Philosophy that Works for You. In that brief episode I remind home educators that their primary loyalty is always to their family—not someone else’s standards.
Our Parental Beginnings: Empowering Youth
December 7, 2023 from Empowering Youth
Welcome to the Global School Podcast! Today’s topic is "Our Parental Beginnings". What have you learned since becoming a parent? What have you learned about parenting and what have you learned about yourself? Sure, learn-by-doing is a great motto but what do you wish you knew from the start? And, what might you still have to learn?
Uniformity
December 4, 2023 from Think Again
I was driving through a town yesterday before school started, and the pavements were full of young people. All wearing white shirts, ties, black trousers or skirts, and blazers. School uniform. Immediately distinctive. You’d see the same on pavements across the UK. The boys all had their shirts tucked out, the girls all had their skirts rolled up.
"They need to see models of what it looks like"
December 4, 2023 from Radical Mothering
I’m so thrilled to be chatting to Sarah Casper about consent, why it’s so crucial and why it’s so much more expansive than we think! We spoke about how Sarah arrived at consent, what consent means, how it’s a practice, and why we shouldn’t over-use the word consent!
