The Not-So-Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck
Feb 22, 2023 from Untigering
The other day, as a P.E. requirement for the charter school that he is enrolled in, KK (my 13yo) had to participate in a physical fitness test. Now, you’ve got to understand, as an unschooling family, we don’t do P.E. class. We also don’t do tests. For exercise, KK takes walks and plays handball and rollerblades and jumps on the trampoline and a host of other activities, but he has never had to do a push-up or curl-up. He has never had to run a timed mile. Those are not generally skills that children spontaneously do.

Here are some thoughts I had after some recent conversations I’ve been having with more seasoned unschoolers about what life without school can truly look like. For a few years, I felt that the role of school was very much a back-up role. School has been there, on the sidelines, ready to sub in; it’s been something to bash but also kind of maybe look towards in moments of doubt; it has been the person prompting when the actor forgets their lines, as if our life were a play and I were a rather forgetful actress.
But How Will they Learn Social Skills Without School?
Feb 20, 2023 from Think Again
But what about socialisation? If you have a child who doesn’t go to school, this is one of the first things you’’ll be asked. To the point where it becomes a bit of a cliche. You hear it and sigh. It's like people can't imagine how social development happens outside school. Which is odd, because those of us who did attend school have usually been told by a teacher that ‘You’re not here to socialise’ when we were trying to have a good chat with our friend.
