February 3, 2024 from The Other Path
How's everyone doing on this first weekend of February? We successfully navigated through January – that felt like the longest month, didn't it? Just got back from a delightful sunrise walk with some friends, and it was absolutely glorious! It was just what I needed, and I'm pretty sure we all needed it.
A Perfect Curriculum or Unschooling?
February 3, 2024 from Stories of an Unschooling Family
During our early years of homeschooling, a friend, her eyes alight with excitement, told me about a curriculum she’d just purchased for her children. She described the neatly packaged units of beauty, truth and goodness, which included famous works of art and music and great literature, as well as the basics of a thorough education.

It’s not often we decide to get together and offer The Shift, our 7-day in person Deschooling Intensive. For those who’ve taken it, they know the magic that is involved. For those who haven’t yet, it might be hard to understand what the fuss is all about. So, we decided to record an episode on what’s up with The Shift, so that you can get a clearer and better understanding of why this offering is a must if you’re a parent or if you work with kids!
Canada Closing Several Schools So Kids Can Stay Inside During Eclipse
February 1, 2024 from Free Range Kids
School’s out on April 8 for many kids in the U.S. and Canada. On that date, a full solar eclipse will be visible from Texas to Ontario, and “There are risks associated with viewing a solar eclipse,” several Toronto-area school boards announced. Those schools moved their May 17 kid-free professional development day to April 8 “to ensure that students will not be outdoors during the total solar eclipse.”

In this episode, we are starting a new series called Unschooling Stumbling Blocks, where we talk about common challenges on the unschooling journey. For this first stumbling block, Pam, Anna, and Erika talk about "quitting" vs "sticking it out." This idea comes up in parenting regardless of whether you're unschooling or not.
Practicing Spelling With An Older Learner
January 31, 2024 from Different By Design Learning
It can be difficult to find ways to practice spelling with an older learner because most programs are designed for young children. This is an in-depth discussion of how I approach spelling with my teenage son’s learning differences.

#56 Older unschoolers and the value of practising being yourself, with Missy Willis in North Carolina
January 30, 2024 from The Unschool Space
My guest today is Missy Willis from Charlotte, North Carolina. Missy is a former teacher who lives with her husband and two children, who are now 21 and 16. They chose to unschool when their eldest child reached school age as it felt like a better fit for their family. Missy’s experience in the classroom as a teacher had also made her question a model in which adult coercion was understood to be essential in learning.
Nurturing Your Energy for the Unschooling Journey
January 30, 2024 from The Other Path
Hey there, friends, Today, let's chat about the ebb and flow of energy in our lives, especially as we navigate the distinctive path of unschooling and home education. In our twelve-year journey (our children have never been to school), there were times when I felt worn down, burnt out, and drained. Life threw big challenges our way – family losses, moving houses, launching new businesses, mental health struggles, and the everyday wear and tear of illnesses, adjusting to new siblings, work changes, and sleepless nights.
Just Look At Her Now!
January 29, 2024 from Think Again
Why are parents so upset and angry about the UK government attendance campaign? It’s because it reveals how the Department for Education thinks about parents of children who are struggling to attend school, and shows how very little they understand of the causes of school attendance difficulties.
An Alternative to Certainty
January 29, 2024 from Brave Writer
I spoke at a conference once where we talked about how to think well. One of the questions came up about certainty, and how you could know something for sure. What we know is that even an objective fact gets shared by a subjective self. No matter how much people can agree that something is real and true, factual and verifiable, it’s how we talk about the “objective truth” that shapes our shared reality.
"Good enough for now, safe enough to try": Marianne Osorio on the power of consent
January 29, 2024 from Small Place By Eloise Rickman
Join Eloise and Marianne for a conversation on sociocracy, the power of consent, and the liberatory potential of education. Flicking through social media or reading the news, it can feel like we’re collectively more divided and polarised than ever - and that we’re increasingly finding it heard to truly hear one another, in our hurry to put across our views first and ‘win’ the debate.
Scientific Revolutions and the Spirit of Amateurism
January 28, 2024 from Freedom to Learn
In my last post I distinguished between professionals and amateurs in four ways: (1) professionals do it for a living, amateurs live to do it; (2) professionals work within boundaries, amateurs wander freely; (3) professionals know, amateurs learn; and (4) professionals aim to separate thought and action from emotion, amateurs often do not. Now, in this post, I pursue the discussion of amateurism with examples of great contributions in science by passionate researchers who were amateurs at the time of their contributions.
Not Back to School, But Always in Love with Learning
January 28, 2024 from Happiness Is Here
When my children were tiny, I hoped that they would never grow to dislike learning. I wanted to keep alive that contagious enthusiasm for life and love of learning that all young children have. I believed that removing school from the equation was the answer. I dreamed of a more fulfilling path for them. We’re still on that path, and I want to share how it’s looking by telling you about a little exchange I had with my almost 15-year-old yesterday.
Great info here. Thanks! Have you read (and considered sharing) any of the very many articles on the Life Learning Magazine website? https://www.life.ca/lifelearning/selected_articles_from_Life_Learning_Magazine.htm
