I want to share some thoughts on whether unschooling prepares our children for the world, and what we even mean when we say we’re preparing them for the world. Because I think we might be meaning different things. We unschoolers love to say that school doesn’t actually prepare children for The Real World, which is a valid point given things like age-segregation, the semi-dictatorial nature of schooling, the apparent irrelevance of much of the curriculum, and so much more.

If Only The Problem with School was Attendance

If only the problem was attendance. If only the real issue was just that children aren’t at school, and so they can’t learn. For then the solution would be so simple. Get them back to school and let the magic happen. No matter how hard it is. ‘Every day counts’ as they sometimes say (in which case, I’m stuffed, I missed an awful lot of school).
