Captured Moments #26
March 23, 2024 from
Hi everyone! How's your week going? Ours has been pretty hectic with car troubles keeping us on our toes. We've had another breakdown (luckily just the car again, not me!), leading to some unplanned bus rides and a lot of juggling to get everywhere we need to be. I think I’ve spent the whole week in the car! With the end of term fast approaching, we've also had Sharing Day at Embers Learning Community, adding to the busy schedule. Needless to say, we're all ready for a rest and slower pace!
Embracing Change

The insightful declaration by Alvin Toffler, "The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn", speaks volumes not just about personal growth but also about the evolution necessary in education and small business practices. This concept is pivotal as we navigate the waters of technological advances and shifting societal norms, especially in how we approach the deschooling of traditional mindsets in both education and marketing.

Why I'm divesting from parenting
March 20, 2024 from
The title of this piece is, obviously, a provocation. I haven’t stopped parenting my children, of course. But - I am giving up on parenting as a thing we do to children. And I am full on rejecting the Parenting-Industrial complex (or trying). And, I think perhaps there is something to explore there.
A Thriving Homeschool | Strategies for Setting Boundaries
March 20, 2024 from Raising Lifelong Learners
When it comes to homeschooling, striking the right balance between teaching responsibilities and personal life can be like walking a tightrope. It’s an intricate dance of dedication to our children’s education while also honoring boundaries that ensure family time, personal space, and self-care are not compromised. As homeschooling parents, carving out these boundaries is not just beneficial; it is essential.

March 19, 2024 from
Dear Substack Community, Warm greetings to all fellow home educators on The Other Path! 🌟 Seth Godin once said, "Stories are a catalyst for change," and here at The Other Path, I wholeheartedly believe in the power of stories to inspire and guide us on our unique journeys into home education. Learning is Not Something That's Done to Us
March 18, 2024 from
My book Challenging Assumptions in Education: From Institutionalized Education to a Learning Society was published back in 2000. It's now a bit dated in some places and out of print, although available as a free download. What follows is an excerpt. Perhaps the most basic assumption our society makes about education is that learning can and should be produced in people. This assumption leads to another one: Learning is the result of treatment by an institution called school.
What Would Happen If School Never Existed?
March 18, 2024 from School Survival
Ever wondered what life would be like if you didn't have to trudge through those school gates every morning? If the thought of that brings a glimmer of hope to your heavy heart, you're not alone. Let's take a moment to ponder what could have been if compulsory schooling never existed. No more standardized tests: No more sleepless nights fretting over exams that don't measure your true worth. Freedom to explore passions: Instead of being stuck in a rigid curriculum, you could dive deep into what truly interests you.
What is behaviour anyway?
March 18, 2024 from
A slide from Tom Bennett’s (UK government behaviour tsar) presentation at the ResearchEd conference this weekend has been making the rounds on Twitter/X. There are many issues with this slide, and I’ve just selected one major problem to discuss. There are others. It’s not defined what ‘behaviour’ means. To a psychologist, behaviour means the way in which a person acts or conducts themselves. All of it. The way we walk, the way we smile, the way that we talk, how we play, what we do with our time – it’s all behaviour.
