All I Want to Be When I Grow up is a Dirtbag
May 21, 2022 from Notes on Adventure
A dirtbag is a permanent wanderer, a lifelong explorer. Making friends everywhere, sleeping anywhere comfortable. Refusing to participate in the normal economy any more than necessary. Not a grisled dropout but a principled opt-out, shunning complaints and commutes and complacency.
Of fishing line and bogs and owning problems (or not)
May 20, 2022 from Copasetic Flow
Two things happened today that could have been bummers, but weren't: one in the morning, and the other in the afternoon. In both cases, as a parent, I could've thrown a fit. One of the things was way easier to deal with than the other though, and because of that, I got to learn something about myself, and that was also kinda nice in addition to getting to have a pretty cool day.

What Is Play?: How Children Define It
May 15, 2022 on Freedom to Learn (Peter Gray)
One of my earliest posts here concerned the definition of play, which I developed further in an article on “Definitions of Play” for Scholarpedia (Gray, 2013) and in my book Free to Learn. I first examined the ways that play has been defined by other play scholars, including such classic writers as Johan Huizinga (in his book Homo Ludens) and Lev Vygotsky (in his essay “The Role of Play in Development”) as well as contemporary researchers.
Thanks for compiling these! I’m taking my time working through all my saved reschooling posts!
