"Parents need to step up": Rowan Ryrie on why we can't leave climate activism to children
November 25, 2023 from Small Places by Eloise Rickman
Listen in as we discuss activism, hope, and why the climate movement needs all of us
Unschooling: Doing What Is Right
November 25, 2023 from Stories of an Unschooling Family
Unschooling is the right thing to do. That’s a bold claim that you might challenge if your ideas about what’s right are different from mine. What if my right is your wrong? Is that the end of the conversation? Or could we agree that we must all decide what’s right for our families, and then live by those principles?
When children's rights aren't enough
November 24, 2023 from Small Places by Eloise Rickman
Children’s rights matter a great deal. They have the power to create genuine opportunities, changes, and benefits for young people, and I strongly feel that we collectively need to improve our literacy around children’s rights so that we can start to build rights-respecting cultures in our homes, schools, communities, and societies.
57. Advancing Liberation Together with Meghan of The Unschool Files
November 24, 2023 from Radical Learning Talks
Language and how we use it are important and can be one of the many ways we either move towards or away from individual and collective liberation. So many of us are questioning systems of oppression in our deschooling work, yet if we aren’t vigilant we can easily slip into old ways of thinking, speaking and behaving - especially when we are faced with language and ideas that rub up against our current beliefs.
"You have the right..."
November 23, 2023 from Small Places by Eloise Rickman
Every child has rights. But many children don’t know what these are, even if they have a strong sense of when these are being violated. Because parents aren’t systematically given information on children’s rights (and most of us weren’t taught about them ourselves, either because the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child didn’t exist yet, was still very new, or our schools / parents didn’t know much about our rights either), most children rely on schools or other settings to teach them about their rights.
Unschooling Parenting Pet Peeve: "Executive" Functioning
November 23, 2023 from Copasetic Flow
The eight year-old kid who has loved to bake since she could climb onto a chair to reach the counter is up at 4:30 baking cornbread for the stuffing with me. The other two kids are still asleep. They'll be up in a while. The parts they're interested in doing come later.
[Podcast #212] Hygge Homeschool for the Holidays
November 22, 2023 from Brave Writer
As the leaves turn and the days shorten, there’s a distinct shift in the air – it’s the cozy season, a time for warmth, reflection, and connection. This season, we’re embracing the Danish concept of ‘hygge’ (pronounced ‘hoo-ga’) in our homeschooling journey. Hygge is all about creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people. It’s the warmth of morning light streaming through the window, the comfort of a hot cup of cocoa, the joy of a shared story.
School gives you panic attacks? There's nothing wrong with you!
November 21, 2023 from School Survival
Hey there, fellow school survivor! If you're reading this, chances are you've experienced those dreaded panic attacks at school. First things first, take a deep breath and know that you're not alone. We get it, and we're here to let you know that there's absolutely nothing wrong with you. School can be an incredibly stressful and unnatural environment, and it's no wonder that it triggers anxiety and panic within so many of us.
#52 Intentional deschooling and lining up with our values, with Daniel Moeller in Pennsylvania
November 21, 2023 from The Unschool Space
Today I’m chatting with Daniel Moeller from Pennsylvania. Daniel is a former teacher and has a 10-year old son, called Kai who has been unschooling for four years. Daniel came across unschooling whilst struggling himself to reconcile many parts of the school system, and in particular the power over dynamic that he was expected to conform to as a teacher.
Tuesday chat: Children's rights special
November 21, 2023 from Small Places by Eloise Rickman
Yesterday was World Children’s Day. The 20th November marks the anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), which was adopted by the UN 34 years ago. The CRC is pretty impressive: it’s the most widely ratified human rights convention in history, with every country (except the US, insert serious side eye here) signing up to a wide ranging set of children’s rights.
This Thanksgiving, Be Thankful for Strangers!
November 20, 2023 from Free Range Kids
As we approach the holiday of gratitude, here’s a little reminder that “stranger-danger” gets it wrong, and we should be grateful for all the humans looking out for kids. This video (click here) was sent to Let Grow by Rosalie Witt, an early childhood instructor, consultant, and coach in Connecticut who helped us pass that state’s “Reasonable Childhood Independence” bill this year!
Kids Do Well If They Can
November 20, 2023 from Think Again
I've been reflecting on this fundamental pillar of Dr Ross Greene’s (@livesinthebalance) approach to living and working with kids, and the more I think about it, the more significant it seems. What it’s really about, for me, is adult attitude. Most of the time, if kids aren’t doing what their parents would like, our assumption is it’s because they don’t want to.
The slippery slope of unschooling
November 20, 2023 from Radical Mothering
You can go from removing school from your radar, even temporarily, to beginning to question all sorts of apparently unrelated things, to realizing that you’re now unschooling and powerless to stop it! How does that even happen? Okay - I know some of you jumped right into unschooling with your eyes closed, trusting it would work.
Brave Writer Precept #7: Honesty, Emotional Safety, Love, and Creative Problem-Solving
November 20, 2023 from Brave Writer
The seventh Brave Writer precept is: Our life together is protected by our commitment to honesty, to emotional safety, to loving each other, and to creative problem-solving. You know what makes a holiday happy? It’s not the presents under the tree. It’s not the best foods.
