Autistic Children and Screens
December 2, 2023 from Think Again
Many years ago, I studied autism at university. We learnt that autistic children did not play imaginatively. At the time, it was a diagnostic feature of autism that young autistic children did not play imaginatively in the way that non-autistic children did. No pretend play where they made shoes into telephones or bananas into microphones.

Soothing things for sad days
November 30, 2023 from Small Places by Eloise Rickman
I had some bad news today. Bad news which, heaped on top of months - actually maybe more like years - of more-or-less constant background bad news on the radio / in the papers / on my phone, felt like a lot. So to remind myself, here are some of the things I reach for when things feel especially sad or bad.

Half-assing the holiday season
November 29, 2023 from Radical Mothering
Hello friends, How are you all holding up so far? This season feels more intense than the average holiday season, and also not much like a holiday season either. Is that just me? Perhaps it’s because it’s still, by all measures, HOT in Bangkok. Like, going to the pool hot. Like, not going for long walks in the middle of the day hot.
Advent Calendar Ideas for 2023
November 29, 2023 from Happiness is Here
Just in the nick of time, I’m here with some advent calendar ideas for this year! I didn’t think I would get this post together but here we are! Still looking for ideas? Hopefully, you find some here! There’s a lot more than 25 because I like to have extras in case I need to adjust things depending on what’s happening that day.
Building Social-Emotional Skills While Helping Others
November 29, 2023 from Raising Lifelong Learners
Parenting is a journey filled with opportunities to shape the character and values of our children. One aspect that deserves our attention, particularly when raising neurodivergent kids, is cultivating empathy and a sense of service.
Parenting within Capitalist Realism
November 28, 2023 from Swimming Upstream
I have so much swirling around my head these days. It’s hard to focus. It’s also really hard to write about anything other than Palestine, but I want to talk about something related (because it’s all related) yet unrelated: capitalist realism and how exploring this notion is opening up new ideas around how to help my kids thrive in the current neo-liberal late-stage capitalist landscape.
Tuesday chat: Advent rituals
November 28, 2023 from Small Places by Eloise Rickman
It’s four weeks until Christmas.* On Friday, my daughter will open the first window of her beautiful, traditional picture advent calendar. (She will also open the first window of this Pokemon calendar, which is objectively hideous but certain to bring delight.) At the end of this week, those who mark the four Sundays of advent will be lighting their first candle - with Waldorf inspired families adding beautiful stones, fossils, seashells and crystals to their advent wreaths.

Brave Writer Precept #8: Help Helps
November 28, 2023 from Brave Writer
The eighth Brave Writer precept is: We acknowledge challenges and face them bravely. We reach out to others, knowing that help helps. It’s really hard to be a homeschooler without support. We make brave decisions every day to show up and believe that what we have to offer our children is enough to give them the education they deserve.
Why Do We Do What We Do?
November 27, 2023 from Think Again
I’ve been observing small children this summer. On beaches, at the swimming pool, in the playground with their parents. Watching their focus and dedication to the things they find meaningful. Watching how much satisfaction they get from doing things their own way, and how strong that drive is. Watching how idiosyncratic their interests are, with one being fascinated by squirrels and another interested in fire engines.

Why does school make me want to throw up?
November 26, 2023 from School Survival
Ever felt like your stomach is doing somersaults at the mere thought of school? You're not alone, and there's a good reason why. Stress and anxiety can pull some pretty wild tricks on your body, and nausea is one of their favorite party tricks. First things first: take a deep breath. There's absolutely nothing wrong with you.
