At the time, it was a diagnostic feature of autism that young autistic children did not play imaginatively in the way that non-autistic children did. It’s four weeks until Christmas.* On Friday, my daughter will open the first window of her beautiful, traditional picture advent calendar. (She will also open the first window of this Pokemon calendar, which is objectively hideous but certain to bring delight.) At the end of this week, those who mark the four Sundays of advent will be lighting their first candle - with Waldorf inspired families adding beautiful stones, fossils, seashells and crystals to their advent wreaths.

I’ve been observing small children this summer. On beaches, at the swimming pool, in the playground with their parents. Watching their focus and dedication to the things they find meaningful. Watching how much satisfaction they get from doing things their own way, and how strong that drive is. Watching how idiosyncratic their interests are, with one being fascinated by squirrels and another interested in fire engines.
