New mini-courses with discount code
December 1, 2022 from Think Again
We are delighted to announce that we are launching two new mini-courses, both based on the popular live webinars. They have extra content and handouts but the core content is the same as the webinars. These webinars are aimed at parents but some people have told me that they have watched them with their teenagers. To celebrate we have a 25% off discount code, valid until Dec 12th. Just put WINTER25 in at the check out to get 25% of either (or both) of these courses.
Can we justify overriding our child's consent because "they will thank us later"?
December 1, 2022 from Radical Mothering
I have a pressing question today! Can we justify overriding our child’s consent in some things - perhaps only a couple - because we care about their “future freedom”? Let me give you an example, or two. I was made to do swimming lessons for YEARS growing up. I never remember being asked, I never fully agreed to do it, I never really enjoyed it. I never wanted to go - I’d pretend I was asleep or sick or passed out in the car on the way there, hoping my mum would notice.
The Landmark Study: Parents Want Independent, Meaningful Learning
November 30, 2022 from Honey! I’m Homeschooling the Kids
What do parents want in their child’s learning experiences? Self-Directed Education: Landmark Research on Family and Student Interests and Needs, the first US national study of its kind, provides key insight into what parents want, suggesting that millions are open to and desire expanding ways of learning. In fact, this study shows that nearly 19 million families are searching for a better learning experience for their children. More than ever, families across the nation are open to exploring alternatives to their current choice in education.
From “America’s Worst Mom” to Recommended Read: Free-Range Kids on CBS Mornings!
November 30, 2022 from Free Range Kids
What a thrill to watch CBS Mornings today and hear Amazon Books’ Sarah Gelman recommending…Free-Range Kids! Here’s the clip (with an ad before it — so it goes). Legitimacy at last! And speaking of last…mine is the last book Gelman recommends, about four minutes into the segment. BUT the other four books sound great, too! And there’s a theme to them — getting parents to relax. That means giving up on perfection AND giving kids more trust and freedom.

November 30, 2022 from Raising Lifelong Learners
The social and emotional needs of gifted and twice exceptional children are a common concern for parents. How do we help strengthen and support our neurodiverse children as they navigate social development and emotional regulation?

90 Seconds of Smiling, Starting…NOW!
November 29, 2022 from Free Range Kids
This is a Let Grow Play Club at a Title I (high poverty) elementary school in South Carolina. Note how the kids are having…what’s that thing called again? FUN. No adults shouting, “Be careful!” No adults asking, “Are you okay?” No adults suggesting things like, “Next time, try to make it a little wider. Take turns raking. Wear long pants.”
The Attenders Party: Should schools be rewarding attendance with parties?
November 28, 2022 from Think Again
Last week a parent told me that they had had a letter to say that their 5-year-old was a persistent absentee, and that if his attendance improved by 5% he would be invited to an Improved Attenders party. Here’s why policies like that are harmful. By introducing a reward for attendance (the party) the attendance issue has been turned into one of ‘trying harder’. The assumption is that some of those missed days shouldn’t have been missed, and if parents and children were more on it, they would have been at school more. The implication is that this is about a lack of motivation. The party is meant to provide the motivation.

25 Great Gifts for Animal Lovers
November 27, 2022 from Raising Lifelong Learners
My house has been a miniature zoo for as long as I can remember. You’ve probably seen our turtles swimming calmly in the background of some of my Facebook live videos. We became chicken keepers this year. At any given moment you can catch my youngest daughter snuggling a gerbil, our rabbit, or a lizard she’s found outside.
