Her eldest daughter had always struggled with school, and it wasn’t until Covid that Donna realised just how deep the school stress was embedded in the whole family. Eventually feeling that there was no alternative but to try something different, she took her daughter out of school.

Something ALMOST, MAY HAVE happened. Yikes! But so begins a “news” story on KHQ, a news station covering Post Falls, Idaho. I’ll leave you to guess whether there really was a bad man luring kids in broad daylight…or a Parks Dept guy setting up a T-ball game.

Why is it, when we’re told that we have to prepare children for the ‘real world’ it always means making them do unpleasant things? It means making them get up early every morning, or wear clothes they hate. It means they must be in school every day, even if they aren’t learning anything. It means ‘holding them accountable’ AKA punishment, if they fail to comply with the demands of adults. It makes making them do things they don’t like, without allowing them to stop.

I woke up this morning to the death toll in Gaza, since October 7: 9,500 people, over 4000 of whom were children. Among the 242 hostages still held by Hamas, 37 are children. In Israeli jails, 170 Palestinian children are held without trial. Every day, close to 60,000 young people and children are held in correctional facilities and jails in the United States, many of them (some stats say close to 85%) are held as de facto adults, in adult jails. The US is the country with the highest youth incarceration rates in the world, and Black youth are five times more likely to be jailed.
