003 Empowering Youth Talk - ""Is Your Learning Theory Up-To-Date" - Part II
November 10, 2023 from Empowering Youth
In this second part of a two part series, we recap Behaviorism, and then cover Cognitivism and Constructivism. When get into discussion about "learning by doing," young learners being supposedly empty vessels waiting to be filled, building "schema," and we also touch upon the ever-present topic of coercion and nudging.
56. When We (and Kids) Lie...
November 10, 2023 from Radical Learning Talks
Kids are usually brought up to tell the truth, but the truth is adults lie all the time. So, why do we lie? What does it do to us and to our relationships? How does it make us feel? And when kids lie to us - what is that really about? And what can we do about it? In this episode of Radical Learning Talks we explore the phenomenon of lying!
What Hath Liam Neeson Wrought?
November 9, 2023 from Free Range Kids
Today’s pithy comment comes in response to yesterday’s post about a mom sick with fear because a man (!!!) was in the vicinity of her daughter. Nothing happened. And yet – because the press is so eager for any story of a child in peril – it reported the “incident” with the gravity usually reserved for a plane crash. (Remember Lenore’s dictum: If something is an “incident” it means NOTHING HAPPENED.)
"How do I get my partner on board with unschooling?"
November 9, 2023 from Radical Mothering

100 Fun And Effective Ways To Practice Sight Words
November 8, 2023 from Different by Design Learning
I put together a comprehensive list of fun and effective ways to practice sight words – because learning to read shouldn’t be boring! It’s about that time. It happens to me every single school year, no matter what our circumstances. I joke about it with my homeschooling friends. Plan all you want, happy little September homeschooling momma, but the resistance is coming. It’s part of homeschooling a struggling learner.
Finding Your Community as a Neurodivergent Family
November 8, 2023 from Raising Lifelong Learners
Homeschooling neurodivergent kiddos is a journey full of ups and downs that’s totally its own adventure. As parents, we can sometimes feel a bit out of place when our little ones don’t quite fit into the usual school mold or hit those typical milestones. But hey, it’s important to remember that we’re the absolute best parents and teachers to guide our kids through this unique ride!
#51 A place of possibility - living, learning and healing beyond school, with Donna in East Sussex
November 8, 2023 from The Unschool Space
My guest today is Donna, from East Sussex in the UK. Donna has two daughters, who are 13 and 11. Her eldest daughter had always struggled with school, and it wasn’t until Covid that Donna realised just how deep the school stress was embedded in the whole family. Eventually feeling that there was no alternative but to try something different, she took her daughter out of school.
Something Unspeakably Awful May Have Almost Practically Happened to a Child!
November 7, 2023 from Free Range Kids
“A mother’s worst nightmare almost came true in broad daylight after a man may have tried to lure her toddler daughter in a residential area.” Gee, that’s a lot of hedging for the first paragraph of an article. Something ALMOST, MAY HAVE happened. Yikes! But so begins a “news” story on KHQ, a news station covering Post Falls, Idaho. I’ll leave you to guess whether there really was a bad man luring kids in broad daylight…or a Parks Dept guy setting up a T-ball game.
81 Adventure Challenges for Young People
November 7, 2023 from Blake Boles
Where does real learning happen in a teenager’s life? Sometimes it takes place in formal classrooms. More often, it happens out in the world, among friends and trusted mentors, in the pursuit of adventure, novelty, usefulness, and meaning.
They Won't Get Away With That in the Real World
November 6, 2023 from Think Again
Why is it, when we’re told that we have to prepare children for the ‘real world’ it always means making them do unpleasant things? It means making them get up early every morning, or wear clothes they hate. It means they must be in school every day, even if they aren’t learning anything. It means ‘holding them accountable’ AKA punishment, if they fail to comply with the demands of adults. It makes making them do things they don’t like, without allowing them to stop.

Brave Writer Precept #5: We Are Seekers and Finders of Everyday Magic
November 6, 2023 from Brave Writer
The fifth Brave Writer Precept is: We coordinate academics with our children’s delights, passions, and skills. We are the seekers and finders of everyday magic. It’s the holidays where seeking and finding everyday magic is a little easier. Maybe it’s the twinkle lights or the fragrance of cinnamon in cookies and hot apple cider. Maybe its festive decor that helps us really see the room we’re in with new eyes.
Not fully human.
November 6, 2023 from Radical Mothering
I woke up this morning to the death toll in Gaza, since October 7: 9,500 people, over 4000 of whom were children. Among the 242 hostages still held by Hamas, 37 are children. In Israeli jails, 170 Palestinian children are held without trial. Every day, close to 60,000 young people and children are held in correctional facilities and jails in the United States, many of them (some stats say close to 85%) are held as de facto adults, in adult jails. The US is the country with the highest youth incarceration rates in the world, and Black youth are five times more likely to be jailed.
