Could Unschooling Be Exactly What Teens Need to Do?
October 6, 2023 from Stories of an Unschooling Family
When unschooling children reach the teenage years, is it time for them to stop following their interests and do some serious structured work instead? If they continue to unschool, will they fail to gain enough knowledge to get into university? Do they need to learn how to write essays, complete assignments, meet deadlines and deal with exams? Do parents need to tighten the rules for teens?
Burnt Out By School?
October 5, 2023 from Think Again
So many of our teenagers are hitting a wall. Something goes wrong – maybe something which seems quite minor at first, like forgetting a piece of homework, or getting into trouble because they haven’t got the right shoes – and that’s it. It’s like something has broken. They don’t want to go back to school, and they don’t want to do anything else either.

October 5, 2023 from Living Joyfully with Unschooling
This week on the podcast, we’re sharing a new episode in the Unschooling “Rules” series! The word “rules” is in quotes, of course, to draw attention to the fact that there is no such thing! When we’re learning something new, it can feel easier to reach for a set of rules to follow, but we want to offer you space to look within and find what makes sense to you and your family.

Washington Post Scares Parents Needlessly
October 3, 2023 from Free Range Kids
Stunned joy is what most of us felt when we learned that Charlotte Sena, the 9-year-old abducted while riding her bike in upstate New York, has been found and returned to her family — alive. The alleged perp has been seized, bringing the number of active Amber Alerts in the entire USA to…one: Keshawn Williams, a 15-year-old from Cleveland. One is one too many, obviously. But it is a far cry from the hundreds of thousands that the media mentioned in the coverage of Charlotte’s disappearance.

#49 Putting the relationship first, with Hayley in Derbyshire, UK
October 2, 2023 from The Unschool Space
My guest today is Hayley from Derbyshire in the UK. Hayley has four children, who are now 25, 22, 18 and 10, and her journey to unschooling started 14 years ago when her eldest child was 11. We talk about how unschooling is so much more than education. It’s about the importance of relationships, and of living in a way that feels coherent to us, and about incorporating joy into our lives. And Hayley tells us about the very different journeys that each of her children are making through life.
What Did You Learn At School Today?
October 2, 2023 from Think Again
School isn't the only way to get an education, and the school way isn't the only way to learn. In fact, some of the skills we need at school are quite different to the skills we need in order to direct our own learning.
Struggling to Read
October 2, 2023 from Brave Writer
Is your child struggling to read well (or at all)? I’m listening to a podcast (suggested by a Brave Writer fan) called “Sold a Story” about the failure of a popular method of teaching reading that doesn’t emphasize explicit phonics instruction. Emily Hanford, the show’s host, cites data that indicates that nearly 65% of fourth graders are poor readers.
Learning to Read, the self-directed version.
October 2, 2023 from Radical Mothering
The past few years I’ve been on a small quiet mission to try to figure out how the research around literacy applies to my self-directed children, and how it can apply to children who are home educated in an informal, consent-based manner (which includes unschooled, self-directed children, but also any eclectic homeschoolers and others who care about consent).
