5 Ways Capitalism Influences Your Parenting
October 14th from Radical Mothering/Swimming Upstream
I often use the term Mother Culture to talk about the way our cultural upbringing and surroundings subversively influence the decisions we make. The term comes from a well-known book, Ishmael by Daniel Quinn. Quinn uses the term to try and show all the ways that this unspoken bias of cultural context influences our lives in ways we might not recognize. In the book, he shows how deconstructing this bias can help open up new ways of thinking about the world.
Why it might be worth lowering your expectations.
October 14th from Swimming Upstream/Radical Mothering
Every Monday, I do a weekly Day in the Life on instagram, where I share our day in stories, walking through the many ways I work to bring consent, autonomy and self-direction into our lives. This week I mentioned the role of expectations in our relationships with our children. We are told that we need to set high expectations so our children can rise to meet them. That if we don’t they either won’t do the thing, or they won’t know what to aim for, or they won’t feel like we expect much of them and they’ll act accordingly.
Preventing Childhood Trauma with Unconditional Love
October 14th, 2023 from Stories of an Unschooling Family
Childhood trauma can follow us into adulthood, affecting what we do, how we feel about ourselves and how we relate to others. We can trace many of our adult problems back to something that happened as we were growing up. If we understand this, we’ll protect our kids, the best we can, from anything that might affect them adversely.
54. When Unschooling Teens Transition to Adulthood
October 13th, 2023 from Radical Learning Talks
For us, the main role of unschooling parents is to support our kids to be who they are and explore their independence, autonomy and critical thinking. The question then is how do we as parents support our kids to navigate their own evolution while being faced with the pressures of societal norms? And, in our case, what can that look like for a neurodivergent teenager and their parents?

What does your "School Story" have to do with your child's learning journey?
October 12th, 2023 from Let ‘em Go Barefoot
We all come to parenting with opinions, beliefs, and attitudes that shape our expectations and ideas about how to raise children. Many of us are aware of these influences and either try to recreate what we experienced in our own childhoods with our kids or we try to change the script and raise our children differently.

Homeschooling Kids with Profound Special Needs with Katie Keene
October 11th, 2023 from Raising Lifelong Learners
Families homeschool for a number of reasons, but in recent years the number of parents homeschooling special needs kiddos has risen. It’s no surprise, as the one-on-one attention a child can get in a homeschool setting is far superior to the many-to-one attention they can get in a traditional school setting. It can be challenging, though, particularly if the special needs are profound and one feels isolated from the rest of the homeschooling community.
If We Don't Control You, You'll Never Amount to Anything
October 9th, 2023 from Think Again
I’m sometimes told that the punitive behaviour strategies which are used in schools are necessary, because otherwise children won’t learn. Some teachers will say that the best way for children to learn is for their behaviour to be tightly controlled at all times – silent corridors, eyes following the teacher, strict routines, punishments for minor infractions like forgetting a pen.
