Let’s Hear It For Talking to Strangers!
September 29, 2023 from Free Range Kids
What a fantastic study: Research recently published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology found that when people are prompted to talk to a stranger, surprising things happen: They start to feel less awkward after doing it a few times. They feel less likely to be rejected. They are more willing to do it in the future. They consider themselves more convivial and approachable. All of which adds up to OPTIMISM and CONFIDENCE. And aren’t those what we want for our kids?

53. Deschooling Pregnancy, Birth, Miscarriage & Abortion
September 29, 2023 from Radical Learning Talks
This is a deep episode where we share personal stories around how we’re deschooling shame and guilt as it relates to pregnancy, birth, miscarriage & abortion. For us, it means looking at how we have responded to and internalized societal expectations on experiences that are both profound and personal. We also talk about what that’s done to our confidence and self-worth, and how we are working to heal from so much of the harm that we’ve been exposed to.
[Podcast] Building a Family Heritage through Homeschool with Amber O’Neal Johnston – Part Two
September 27, 2023 from Brave Writer
We’re continuing our deep dive discussion into Amber O’Neal Johnston’s new book, A Place to Belong. Previously in Part One, we talked about what led Amber to write the book—having a big juicy discussion around family culture, normalizing difficult conversations, and building a framework for inclusion within the family. We also talked about the different ways books can be viewed through a cultural lens: As mirrors, windows, or sliding doors.
Radical Mothering Ep1
September 27, 2023 from Radical Mothering
I had such a great conversation with Susan Gray over the weekend, and I’m excited to share it with you! We talked about working full-time while unschooling, letting go of control, and how education doesn’t have to look one way only (and much much more!).
Calm the Chaos with Dayna Abraham
September 27, 2023 from Raising Lifelong Learners
We live in a world where children must express themselves, whether it’s discomfort at school or anxiety they may be feeling. As parents, we have all witnessed the incredible power of actively teaching children how to communicate their emotions. My own kiddo struggles with anxiety and it is amazing to see her find the words to explain her feelings as she grows. It’s never too early to start teaching children to articulate their emotions and experiences – the benefits are immeasurable!
Who Should Be Responsible for a Child’s Education, the Parent or the Child?
September 26, 2023 from Stories of an Unschooling Family
Who should be responsible for a child’s education, the parent or the child? Is learning an active activity that needs the learner’s cooperation? Is it impossible to force knowledge into a child without resorting to teaching methods that ultimately destroy their natural love of learning? Is forced learning real learning? Is it better to unschool and let children learn what’s important to them?
Everything I Wish I Knew Before Roadschooling
September 26, 2023 from Stark Raving Dad
Sunday, 10am, a week before Christmas. I’ve just pulled our car and caravan onto a narrow strip of gravel near the highest point of Arthur’s Pass. Arguably the most stunning of three alpine passes that traverse the Southern Alps on the South Island of New Zealand, and - at over 3,000 feet above sea level - categorically the one that makes you climb the highest.
Doing it For the Points
September 25, 2023 from Think Again
I'm at a conference and the app we are using has a points system. If I attend the Welcome Reception and scan in, I get 1000 points. If I connect with someone else over the app, I get points. If I upload a photo of myself, I get points. It's a competition, there are ranks and I can set myself goals of how many points to get. There are badges to win if I get enough points.
The Importance of Rest
September 25, 2023 from Brave Writer
We cannot underestimate the power of fatigue to crush the life out of even the strongest of us! Take a nap, swing in a hammock, snooze. The most difficult resource to keep in stock is rest. Yet rest changes everything!
